According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. Wellton is located along Interstate 8 and the former route of U.S. Route 80. The town was named after the wells providing water for the railroad. Wellton's history is deeply rooted in agriculture, and the town prides itself on its rich farming heritage.
