History
According to the IBGE's historical account, the first exploration of the region was carried out by the bandeirante Aleixo Garcia, and settlement began around 1580 with the establishment of Spanish Jesuit missions, which were destroyed by bandeirante expeditions from 1628 onward. Clashes between bandeirantes and Castilians dragged on for decades, and the area was part of the territory of the Iguatemi Military Colony, maintained until 1777, when it was attacked by Castilian forces commanded by Agostinho Fernandes de Pinedo, governor of Paraguay; the First Treaty of San Ildefonso, signed the same year, put an end to the armed clashes. With the creation of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul by federal complementary law No. 31 of October 11, 1977, the municipality became part of the new federative unit.
