History
Ladário's origins go back to the effort of the Portuguese Crown to consolidate the western frontier of Portuguese America. In 1775, Fort Coimbra was founded, and from 1776 onward expeditions commanded by sergeant-major Marcelino Rodrigues Camponês and by the sertanista João Leme do Prado traveled the Paraguay River in search of areas suitable for the establishment of a settlement to support navigation and the defense of the region. Leme do Prado took possession of lands on the right bank of the river in December 1776 and, in July 1778, received from governor Luís de Albuquerque the order to found the settlement. By law No. 134 of March 16, 1896, Ladário was elevated from parish to village, with the same limits as the police district, subordinate to the municipality of Corumbá — a situation maintained in the 1911, 1936, 1937 and 1950 territorial divisions, according to the administrative formation recorded by the IBGE. The municipality was installed on March 17, 1954, in a ceremony presided over by the judge of the Corumbá judicial district, when the first mayor, Armando Thomaz de Almeida, took office by appointment. The first municipal elections were held on October 3 of the same year, electing Ariquerme da Rocha Galvão, sworn in on January 31, 1955, the date of the creation of the Municipal Council.
Geography
The municipal seat lies at 19°00′18″ south latitude and 57°36′07″ west longitude, on the right bank of the Paraguay River, about six kilometers upstream from the center of Corumbá and about 12 kilometers from the border with Bolivia. The municipal territory, with , is entirely surrounded by the municipality of Corumbá, forming an enclave. The municipality's relief presents contrasts: the seat lies in an area of accumulation plain, at of altitude, while the territory includes part of the Urucum hills, where the highest point of Mato Grosso do Sul is found — Morro Grande, at about . Besides this, the Urucum hill and the Banda Alta hill stand out as geographic features. The predominant soils in the municipality are clayey and very clayey Chernozems of high natural fertility; in the hilly areas, Neosols predominate, and there are also occurrences of Planosols. The local geology includes the Tamengo Formation, consisting of dark-gray calcitic limestone, with carbonate breccia and intercalations of dolomite, chert and carbonaceous shale. Ladário belongs to the Paraguay River hydrographic region and lies within the Taquari Planning and Management Unit (UPG), according to the State Water Resources Plan of Mato Grosso do Sul. The Paraguay River, which bathes the municipal seat, is the main watercourse of the municipality and constitutes the natural boundary with Corumbá and with Bolivia. The Paraguay hydrographic region occupies about 47.46% of the state's area, with the Taquari, Negro, Miranda and Apa rivers standing out, tributaries of the left bank of the Paraguay. The municipality's vegetation is typical of the Pantanal, the biome that covers its entire territory — a unique case among Brazilian municipalities according to the IBGE. The vegetation cover is varied,…
