History

The region of São Gabriel do Oeste has been the scene of activity since the mid-1885. Historical records indicate that the area where the seat of the municipality is now located was first occupied by cattle ranchers from Minas Gerais. The precursor of this first incursion was Bernardino Ferreira da Cunha; his descendants report that the Brioso Farm — Bernardino's — reached 70,000 hectares and covered the entire area that would become São Gabriel do Oeste. At the time, the region was part of the municipality of Coxim. In 1948, part of the territory of Coxim was separated — the municipality of Camapuã was created, containing the districts of Ponte Vermelha and Areado. The occupation of the lands was limited to the furnas — the more rugged regions provided with water — since the plateaus of the chapadão were not propitious for agricultural and pastoral activities. Only in the 1970s did the region awaken to a new era of development. The possibility of using the cerrado area for agriculture was perceived. From 1971, the region began to be studied as a site for coffee growing. Learning of the plans of the Brazilian Institute of Coffee Growers for coffee planting, a migrant from Campo Grande named Gabriel Abrão bought an area near the Ponte Vermelha stream. Interested in buying lots for coffee production, people from Paraná contacted Gabriel Abrão. In 1973, directors of the timber company Maffissoni e Sorgatto S/A, from Renascença, Paraná, settled in the region. The group created the headquarters of a new farm, located on the banks of the Capão Redondo stream. A new stage in the development of the region then began, with the arrival of Balduíno Maffissoni, soon followed by other people from the Southwest of Paraná and the West of Santa Catarina: Ângelo and Brizot, Silvino…
