Mettembert is a municipality in the district of Delémont in the canton of Jura in Switzerland.

History & geography

History

Mettembert is first mentioned in 1170 as Mettenbere. In 1208 it was mentioned as Mettenberg. The municipality was formerly known by its German name Mittemberg, however, that name is no longer used.

Geography

Mettembert has an area of . Of this area, or 40.1% is used for agricultural purposes, while or 53.4% is forested. Of the rest of the land, or 7.8% is settled (buildings or roads) and or 0.4% is unproductive land. Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 3.0% and transportation infrastructure made up 4.3%. Out of the forested land, 51.7% of the total land area is heavily forested and 1.7% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 17.2% is used for growing crops and 10.8% is pastures and 11.6% is used for alpine pastures. The municipality is located in the Delemont district, on the exposed side of a small valley north-west of Delemont.
