History

Zwedru is best known for the birthplace of former 21st president of Liberia, Samuel Doe. After taking power in a bloody coup d’état in 1980, he installed a number of pavements and also constructed a mansion on the edge of town but he did not live there even for a night until 9 September 1990, when he was captured, tortured and murdered by rebels at a military base in Monrovia.
