History
Tarnov was laid out in 1889. A large share of the early settlers being natives of Tarnów, Poland, caused the name to be selected. A post office was established at Tarnov in 1891, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1969. On August 19, 1943, the U.S. Army dropped seven practice bombs on Tarnov, mistaking it for either the Stanton Bombing Range, which was located 25 miles to the northeast, or a bombing range to the southwest, near Silver Creek. The B-17s, from the Sioux City, Iowa, Army Air Field, did little damage and no one was injured or killed.
