Geography

The commune is located in the central part of Maramureș County, northeast of the county seat, Baia Mare, and lies on the banks of the river Cosău. County road connects Budești with the town of Cavnic, away, through the . The road features a gravity hill, where the layout of the surrounding land produces an optical illusion, making the 8% downhill slope appear to be an uphill slope.
