The post office was established in 1870 and the name has been borne by the community ever since.
Looneyville is a tiny unincorporated community in Roane County, West Virginia, tucked into the wooded ridges where Flat Creek joins the Pocatalico River. The settlement takes its name from Robert Looney, a pioneer who established a homestead here in the early 1800s. A post office opened in 1870 and gave the place its formal identity; the name was real enough that no one in 150 years has lobbied to change it, despite occasional out-of-state amusement. Today Looneyville consists of a small cluster of homes, a Pentecostal church, and a country store strung along West Virginia Route 36, roughly halfway between Charleston and Spencer. The surrounding hills are typical of central Appalachia: dense second-growth hardwood forest, narrow hollows, and creeks that swell quickly after summer storms.
