Sunset Strip

History

The town was established in the 1960s through the privately developed Sunset Strip Estate, which provided more than 350 residential allotments. It was designed by civil engineer Ronald Lee and occupies a 38-hectare triangular site between Back Beach Road and Phillip Island Road. The estate was first marketed in early 1961, with purchasers entering contracts that were conditional upon subdivision approval being granted within several months. Approval was delayed for several years, however, resulting in the cancellation of most contracts. Subdivision approval was eventually granted in late 1963, after which land sales resumed and continued until early 1968. Progress was initially slow, with only 17 homes built by 1975. The town is named after the Sunset Strip, the stretch of Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, California. The place was popularised in Melbourne by the American private detective crime drama 77 Sunset Strip, which aired frequently on Channel 9 between 1959 and 1964.
