Overview

Atascadero is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. It lies in the inland part of the Central Coast, between the Salinas River and the Santa Lucia Range, at the junction of U.S. Route 101 and State Route 41. Its population was 29,773 at the 2020 census.

History & geography

Geography

Atascadero occupies part of the upper Salinas Valley, with the Salinas River to the east and the Santa Lucia Range to the west. Its landscape includes oak woodland, grassland and chaparral. The city's open spaces provide habitat within the developed area; Atascadero Lake is a stopover for migrating waterfowl. According to the Census Bureau's 2020 gazetteer, Atascadero covers , including of land and of water. Water accounts for approximately 0.24 percent of the total area.
