Dallol lies atop an active volcanic system where magma close to the surface heats groundwater that has dissolved through thick layers of ancient salt, left behind when a sea that once covered the Danakil Depression evaporated millions of years ago. This combination produces hydrothermal springs rich in sulfur, iron, and various salts, which crystallize on the surface into extraordinary formations of neon yellow, acid green, and rust orange, giving the area an almost extraterrestrial appearance.

The salt trade of the Afar

For centuries, the Afar people have mined salt slabs from the flat plains surrounding Dallol, cutting them by hand into uniform blocks that are loaded onto camel caravans and transported across the desert to markets, a practice that continues today largely unchanged despite the extreme heat.
