Every big city has bars. The cities below have nightlife — entire neighbourhoods, scenes and subcultures organised around staying out late. Closing times in most of them are negotiable.

North Holland, Netherlands · pop. 881,933
Amsterdam blends the relaxed coffeeshop scene with serious clubs like De School (closed 2023), Shelter and Radion. The Amsterdam Dance Event each October has grown into Europe's largest electronic-music conference and festival, with 600,000+ attendees across dozens of venues.
The city's experiment with 24-hour licences has spread across northern Europe as a template for sustainable nightlife policy.
Buenos Aires City, Argentina · pop. 3,121,707
Buenos Aires starts dinner at 10 pm and the milongas not long after — going out 'early' here means before midnight, and most clubs don't really fill until 2 am. The Palermo and San Telmo neighbourhoods anchor different ends of the spectrum.
The milonga tango halls, including Salón Canning and La Catedral, are still actively used by porteños, not just tourists.
Nevada, United States · pop. 678,924
Las Vegas is the only city in the world where the nightlife is also the main industry. Mega-clubs (Omnia, XS, Hakkasan), Vegas residencies (currently Adele, Bruno Mars, U2 at the Sphere) and 24-hour casino floors have built an entire economy around staying up.
The Sphere venue, opened in 2023, has redefined what a concert space can look like and pulled in artists who would not otherwise have played a residency.
Acre, Brazil
São Paulo's clubs run later than its sunrise. Vila Madalena (botecos and live music), Baixo Augusta (LGBT and underground) and Vila Olímpia (high-end) anchor one of South America's biggest scenes.
The city's Carnival is less famous than Rio's, but the bloco street parties have grown rapidly in scale. The samba schools rehearse year-round.
Bangkok, Thailand · pop. 5,527,948
Bangkok's rooftop bars (Vertigo at Banyan Tree, Sky Bar at Lebua), night markets (Chatuchak, Talad Rod Fai), and Khaosan Road / Soi 11 / Thonglor districts together produce one of the most varied and intense nightlife scenes in Asia. Closing times are technically 2 am but routinely negotiated.

Tokyo, Japan · pop. 13,613,660
Tokyo's nightlife runs the full spectrum: Shinjuku's Golden Gai alleys of tiny 5-seat bars, Shibuya megaclubs like WOMB, underground jazz dens in Kichijoji, the standing bars and izakayas of every train station. The last trains leave at midnight, which channels everything either home early or all the way through to first trains at 5 am.

Seoul, South Korea · pop. 9,635,445
Seoul's Hongdae (university and indie scene), Itaewon (international and LGBT), and Gangnam (high-end club district) are designed for all-night crawls. Korean BBQ at 4 am is its own legitimate genre, and the city's 24-hour public transit on weekends makes the long night out infrastructurally easy.
The 2022 Itaewon disaster prompted a major rethink of crowd-management at street-level events, but the underlying nightlife economy has continued to grow.
England, United Kingdom · pop. 8,908,083
London's pubs traditionally close at 11 pm, but its club scene, the Night Tube on Friday and Saturday, and the 24-hour licences in Soho, Shoreditch and Dalston keep the city humming through dawn. Fabric, Phonox and Printworks (now closed) defined an era.
The city's Night Czar, appointed in 2016, was the first official municipal role of its kind in the UK and has been replicated in several other cities.
Catalonia, Spain · pop. 1,713,247
Barcelona's nightlife stretches from late tapas at midnight to beach clubs (Pacha, Opium, Shôko) that open at 3 am and don't really close until breakfast. The Raval, El Born and Gràcia districts each have a distinct after-dark personality.
The summer Sónar Festival is the city's electronic-music centrepiece. Spanish dining hours (lunch at 2 pm, dinner at 10 pm) effectively shift the whole nightlife clock forward.
Berlin, Germany · pop. 3,769,962
Berlin's techno scene, with clubs that simply don't close on weekends, has made it the global capital of going out. Berghain's reputation as the most selective club in the world is the most-cited example, but Tresor, Sisyphos, Watergate and dozens of smaller venues anchor the wider scene.
UNESCO inscribed Berlin techno culture on Germany's intangible cultural heritage list in 2024. Most clubs operate without published closing times — many parties run from Friday night straight through Monday morning.
How we chose these
We weighed several measures together: DJ Mag's annual Top 100 Clubs poll, presence on Resident Advisor's most-cited cities, late-licence policy and operating hours, plus more qualitative assessments from Time Out's annual city surveys and the Vibrant Cities at Night programme. The list deliberately spans different nightlife traditions — techno, tango, izakaya, megaclub, beach club — rather than ranking on a single 'club volume' metric.
